New Happenings in the World of Squidoo
Lots of stuff happening today that’s Squidoo news related, figured a roundup post was in order.
4 new Modules were released (SquidBlog) today, I think the two Amazon modules are especially worth taking a look at. Haven’t looked too close to see which of these are evergreen, if any. I’ll cover that in a post soon. These add to the recent Backtype module as well as a few others in the past few months. Keep ‘em comin HQ, I’m a fan!
Squidoo now has it’s on page on AllTop called Squidoorati. It shows the top 5 lenses of any category…except mine for some reason… Growwear broke the news about Squidoorati and Jaguar Julie added her take a bit later. Looks like it could be cool, but I’m not fully sold yet.
SquidBlog also announced Squidoo computer charity month today. Looks like yet another awesome idea for giving money to great causes.
BDKZ posted a great little tidbit on the ‘So You Want To Be A Giant Squid?‘ blog that gives a running timeline of important Squidoo events. If you ever wonder what came before, this is a great little primer.
That about sums up all the news I caught today. Did I miss anything?

Hey, Captain: Thank you for the mention! …Squidoorati came about as an effort to combat Squidoo’s being perceived as just a bunch of spammers — as far as I am concerned anyway; I don’t know what Seth’s reason was for giving Guy the go-ahead. Being at Alltop, to me, means the “cream of the crop” is on display and directly linked at a very credible, unaffiliated, an off-site location. It says to the world that we ARE doing something worthwhile, and here it is! I think Alltop is great! (The five lenses below each category are the top five “latest updated” out of the 100.)

Oops! Should have mentioned that to update you have to squidcast. Wrote about this in the comments section at the blog…

ah HA! I didn’t notice the new amazon modules but I DID see something called “text plus big picture” I’d never noticed before…of course since I don’t experiemtn w/new modules much maybe that one isn’t new?

Well Cap, you did say things were going to heat up around here. You were right!

After having stopped long enough to check out Squidoorati a little more, it became obvious that I was mistaken about the squidcast only. If you update your lens, you are also in the top 5 — until other folks come along and update after you and move you off the list.
Squidoorati is definitely a heater-upper.
Forgot where all I posted squidcast only. Words to haunt me in my dreams!

Hey there mighty Captain! Thanks for the mention about my comments on the Squidoorati as reported by MiMi aka GrowWear. I personally would hope that it will develop into being a worthwhile listing of lenses that are ALL the TOP lenses, not simply those being updated or squidcasted. I rather like a thumbnail overview that’s concise, but accurate. And, count me in as someone who doesn’t want to see spammy lenses giving the perception of ‘that’s Squidoo.’

Wow, that’s a lot of information – half of the stuff I didn’t know about so I guess I’m still not as nearly as knowledgeable about Squidoo as I’d like to become – lots to learn still…
However, I really like the fact that new modules are added all the time because I like to experiment (the text w/big picture module is great, BTW) and use different modules depending on the topic I’m writing about.
Definitely a very useful post, Captain – thank you. I’ll be back to check everything out properly but right now I have to finish my packing.

Thanks for all of this news, it was all new to me — guess I should at least start reading Squidblog. Still trying to figure out how often Squidoorati updates their lists of 5. Hoping one of mine shows up there soon!

Where is the use in swapping ratings when it doesn’t count anyways?!?
For me as a relativly new squidoo user it seems that 2-5 quality rating boost your site and everything else is pretty much related to traffic / incoming links, where the traffic is the more important factor.
