Squidoo Changes Layout – Hysteria Ensues…..Again
Well, as Squidoo HQ has mentioned several times, they continue to adjust and update their templates for lenses and how users interact with them.
If you haven’t had a chance to go look at a lens in the last few days, go take a peek. It’ okay… I’ll wait.
…
Okay, so it looks a little bit different. And Squid U certainly noticed. I left my two cents on the update, but I’ll re-cap here.
Personally, I think they are pretty good.
1) I don’t like the ‘Loyalis Recommends’ in my sidebar. If you are going to have a lensroll function, I would prefer that it didn’t look like I was explicitly endorsing lenses that I’ve never seen before. Also, when you use Primary Tag Domination, it results in having your sidebar lensroll and the orange explore box with the exact same links… that’s kinda boring IMHO.
2) umm…. I see the sidebar image issues were fixed in my sleep! Nice work.
As HQ is progressing and working on their layouts and designs, I have been impressed with the way they have handled the criticism, etc. They have been exceptionally patient in explaining their motivations for changes and improvements to Squidoo and this patience is often overlooked.
I think there may be some argument to directing some of the redesign efforts to improved things like tag pages, the workshop (which is becoming a little divorced from the reality of what’s presented), as well as some re-designed ‘central navigation’ areas that make it easy to find some super cool lenses…oh and a pony for Gil..
Great work Guys, keep it up.

Thanks for the tweet and the blog post here. I wasn’t aware of the change until you noted it.
I agree with most of what you said.
I was pretty upset about the “johndilbeck recommends” on one of my lenses, because it linked to several lenses that I WOULD NOT recommend.
It turns out that it’s a bug. Megan says that it should be the lensroll and if nothing is lensrolled on that lens it should be empty, not showing random lenses we don’t recommend. Hopefully, that will be fixed soon.
Keep up the good work, Cap’n.
All the best,
JD

Thanks for the heads up, wasn’t even aware of this. I agree with your assessment, there are so many other things they could be upgrading/changing that would actually add value to Lensmasters and Audiences alike.

Hey Captain,
I saw the changes last night. I saw the uproar over at Squid U when I went over to voice my opinions. Luckily I kept my mouth shut because I found out I had control of the one thing I really don’t like.
Which is the monster orange box leading people right away from my lens before they’ve even had a chance to look.
I realized I can turn it off and add my own choices.
I’m still not super thrilled by placement ~ I think it would be better toward the end, and it would be nice if my suggestions were put at the beginning of the list instead of at the end.
I feel like I got ‘em there I should at least have first crack at the next stop.
Great post, informative as always.
Thanks,
Jackie Lee

Hey Capt’n.
Thanks for the review. And for the support!
As I posted on the SquidU forum, the “Lensmaster Recommends” section is now working as designed, which is to show off your Lensroll for that lens. In other words, it’s 100% a list of lenses you’ve chosen to feature. There was a bug this morning that showed other, related lenses in there, but that’s since been squashed.
Oh, and I’m sure you know that the “orange box” is optional. But consider giving it a shot! We’re already seeing some good numbers coming from it…which means more traffic for everyone, and stickier readers on your pages.
Thanks for hanging in!

Megan,
In fact, I think the orange box is one of my favorite new tidbits.
Primary tags plus the discover area is leading to increased traffic already. I’m pretty sure that I’m getting 2-5 different lens visits from some of my ‘clusters’ which is quite exciting
