Squidoo Restyles Homepage to Better Feature Top Lenses
Squidoo has re-launched their home page with an eye towards sending first time visitors to some of the top lenses around (official blog post announcement).
I think this is a massive improvement on the front page and it allows you to easily scan the first 5 lenses in each Squidoo category.
However, after showing it around a bit I heard a little criticism and I tend to agree with what I’ve heard. As you scroll down the new homepage, it’s very difficult to focus on any specific category.
There’s a lot of text that isn’t separated out in any appreciable way.
Here’s the two ways I think you can fix it.
1) add a tiny logo next to each category like a little skyscraper for business or a picture of a flower for Home and Gardening.
2) make the background of the title for each category a bit darker or find some other way to separate each category graphically.
Besides those minor gripes, I think it’s a great idea and I really hope that Squidoo continues to tweak and refine it over the next few months.
What do you guys think?

I really love the new layout. It’s definitely a great motivation to get into the top 5 of a category! Perhaps, even, motivation to stick with one niche a single cat on Squidoo to increase chances of getting there.

I like how they put a link to the other templates on the front page. I have been doing squidoo for years and have no idea how to get to the other lens types lol.

It’s probably nice for squidoo, it reminds me a bit of the alltop project. Overall though, I don’t think it changes a thing for me. I neither have squidoo as a starting page, nor do rank in the top10 of anything. I wonder if there are really a lot of people starting with the squidoo front page, or if it is close to being useless.

Looks nice! Should help with the google rankings of the top 5 pages of each category too

I like the new layout too, it does give the first time visitor an idea as to the type of lens that you can create using Squidoo, and also offers an idea of the wide variety too.
Still, it continues to favor the top 5 in each category, which is great if your lens can maintain a high ranking.
